Snacks and Meals Served
Juanita Bay Montessori School will provide a snack to the children during circle time. The snack will be nutritious and will represent the important food groups.
PLEASE BE SURE TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL OF ANY FOOD ALLERGIES THAT YOUR CHILD MIGHT HAVE!
Lunches: Each Friday, lunch will be provided by the school. All the students attending on Fridays will prepare portions of the lunch. This will give all the children some experience in food preparation and the parents a day off from making a lunch.
Monday through Thursday parents will need to pack a lunch for their child. A microwave is available in the classroom to heat up items for the children. Please provide a healthy, nutritious lunch. Please also include a napkin to serve as your child’s placemat. If you have items in your child’s lunch that need to be kept cold, please pack them in the lunch box with a cold pack. There is a limited amount of refrigerator space available.
For your child’s birthday, a special celebration will be held at school. Summer birthdays may celebrate a 1/2 birthday if they wish. Parents should send in a special birthday snack for all of the children. Cupcakes, however, are very hard for the children to eat and are very messy. Please do not send cupcakes. Cookies are a nice alternative.
Circle and Instruction
There will be a new unit of study introduced each month in order for the children to get hands on, in-depth instruction about a variety of subjects. They range from puppets to volcanoes, dental health to safety, dinosaurs to geography, and the list goes on and on. No unit of study will be repeated within a three year period.
The following five subjects will be taught on a weekly basis. They will be rotated among the days of the week so that children attending less than five days a week will still be exposed to all of the subjects.
A variety of rhythm and percussion instruments will be used in conjunction with formal music instruction, as well as with a variety of music experiences during daily circle lessons. The classroom teacher also plays guitar and will use it frequently to supplement music and songs. A 3/4 size children’s guitar will be available to the children for them to experiment with and make their own music.
The children will be taught some basic Spanish phrases in addition to counting, names of animals, days the week and months, foods, colors etc. The children are at a time in their lives when second and third languages are learned very easily and they enjoy the exposure to the new words and concepts.
In addition to the outdoor recreation available during daily recess time, a more structured movement instruction will be provided to the children to help develop large motor skills. We have developed a varied curriculum to help maximize the coordination and large motor development that is so important to the young child.
Each week we will explore the world of science through some basic, but fascinating science experiments that the children can repeat as many times as they wish on their own during classroom work time.
We will learn to follow recipes, measure ingredients, and whip up some yummy treats.
