Circle and Instruction

There will be a new unit of study introduced each month in order for the children to get hands on, in-depth instruction about a variety of subjects. The subjects include volcanoes, dinosaurs, solar system, human body, sea life, pond life, animals, bugs and insects, botany, recycling, cooking, nutrition, dental health, art exploration, holidays and customs, transportation, and safety.

The following five subjects will be taught on a weekly basis. They will be rotated among the days of the week so that children attending less than five days a week will still be exposed to all of the subjects.

A variety of rhythm and percussion instruments will be used in conjunction with formal music instruction, as well as with a variety of music experiences during daily circle lessons. The classroom teacher also plays guitar and will use it frequently to supplement music and songs. A 3/4 size children’s guitar will be available to the children for them to experiment with and make their own music.

The children will be taught some basic Spanish phrases in addition to counting, names of animals, days the week and months, foods, colors etc. The children are at a time in their lives when second and third languages are learned very easily and they enjoy the exposure to the new words and concepts.

In addition to the outdoor recreation available during daily recess time, a more structured movement instruction will be provided to the children to help develop large motor skills. We have developed a varied curriculum to help maximize the coordination and large motor development that is so important to the young child.

Each week we will explore the world of science through some basic, but fascinating science experiments that the children can repeat as many times as they wish on their own during classroom work time.

We will learn to follow recipes, measure ingredients, and whip up some yummy treats.
